Leadership Learning Resources

Being an effective leader can create positive change for communities. 

This tool provides leadership learning opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and girls seeking to build leadership skills and knowledge.

The Australian Rural Leadership Foundation offers programs that are focused on creating change in rural, regional and remote communities across the continent.1

The Australian Indigenous Governance Institute (AIGI) is an independent, Indigenous led, not-for-profit organisation that is focused on developing resources and training to support Indigenous Australians’ self-determined governance and leadership.2 

The Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre (AILC) is focused on building the leadership capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to make a difference in communities. 3

The Leadership Institute is focused on developing leaders and managers across industry and professions and offers a variety of workshops, training programs and summits.4

Oxfam Australia is focused on First Peoples justice and runs several relevant programs that tackle First Peoples inequality.5

Tranby Aboriginal Co-operative Ltd is an Aboriginal-controlled education institution focused on providing life-changing opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults.6

Western Australian Aboriginal Leadership Institute (WAALI) is an independent organisation that is focused on encouraging Aboriginal people to take on leadership roles to empower family and community.7

 

  • The Australian Rural Leadership Foundation offers two leadership programs aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders across the continent. 
  • Developed and maintained by AIGI, the Indigenous Governance Toolkit is an extensive online resource aimed at supporting Indigenous groups, organisations and communities to understand, build and evaluate governance mechanisms.10 The Toolkit provides explanations, questions, examples, case studies, videos and templates relevant to Indigenous governance. 
    • Leadership for Governance is a section of the Toolkit  that includes a definition of leadership and some explanations of effective leadership.
  • The AILC offers accredited and non-accredited leadership training options. 
  • The Leadership Institute runs the annual Indigenous Leadership Summit which aims to drive meaningful Indigenous leadership change across sectors.11
  • Straight Talk is Oxfam Australia’s signature program that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women to make positive changes within community by engaging in political systems.12
  • Tranby runs the Yanalangami – Strong Women, Strong Communities project which includes an annual national leadership program – Yanalangami National Cultural Leadership and Empowerment. The program has been created by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, bringing together voices and passions to build networks of strength and celebrate the many achievements that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have made across the continent.13
  • WAALI offers two leadership programs: 
    • Yorga Djenna Bidi is designed for Aboriginal women who are focused on influencing, leading and generating change.14
    • Emerging Leaders a 10 week program designed to increase experience, confidence and connections through culture.15
