Learning Resources
This tool provides a variety of learning resources and training opportunities to increase governance skills and knowledge. Topics include governance broadly, but also includes some practicalities of business operations, relationships and financial literacy.
The tool can be used to identify relevant policies and procedures to guide effective daily and long-term practice to meet specific governance requirements and ultimately, achieve the goals of the organisation.
The Australian Indigenous Governance Institute (AIGI) is an independent, Indigenous led, not-for-profit organisation that is focused on developing resources and training to support Indigenous Australians’ self-determined governance.1
- Developed and maintained by AIGI, the Indigenous Governance Toolkit is an extensive online resource aimed at supporting Indigenous groups, organisations and communities to understand, build and evaluate governance mechanisms.2 The Toolkit provides explanations, questions, examples, case studies, videos and templates relevant to Indigenous governance.

The Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) is a director member organisation that aims to assist leaders in strengthening the governance of the organisation.3
Business.gov.au is an Australian government website that provides information about operating businesses, including Indigenous, in Australia.4
First Nations Foundation is a financial and wellbeing foundation that works with Indigenous communities and the finance industry to provide financial education, training and information.5
The Governance Institute of Australia is a national membership association that is focused on advocating and driving better governance.6
Ninti One is a multi-layered organisation focused on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in remote Australia to foster innovative and sustainable businesses and communities.7
The Office of the Registrar of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporations (ORIC) is an independent statutory office that operates under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006 (CATSI Act) and is responsible for supporting and regulating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups and corporations.8
Our Community is focused on creating and disseminating practical resources to support not-for-profit and grantmaking organisations to build stronger communities.9

Business.gov.au provides links to free, low cost business Webinars, events and training across jurisdictions.
Business SA provides a portal to Training Courses, including online, covering a variety of topics such as business, leadership and management and self-development.[10]
The Australian Indigenous Governance Institute offers Tailored Professional Development and Education and Training for Indigenous groups and organisations at all levels.
ORIC offers a variety of training, including governance workshops and corporation-specific training.
Ninti One has developed a Two-Way Governance Resource to increase community understanding of governance processes, management and structure.
The Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) offers a variety of Courses in governance covering essentials to directorship.
The Governance Institute of Australia offers a variety of governance Short courses and certificates via different learning modes (face-to-face, online).
Our Community includes the Institute of Community Directors Australia which offers a variety of governance training options.
Business.gov.au provides the steps to Register your business name. ASIC also has information about Registering a business name and links to the same Business Registration Service. The ASIC video Registering a business name provides an overview of the process.[11]
The Your people section of the AIGI Indigenous Governance Toolkit includes Relationships and discusses ways to build and maintain healthy relationships, as well as develop networks and partnerships.
ORIC, in partnership with Justice Connect, offers Working with other organisations (online) and covers topics including, memorandum of understanding, legal considerations and additional resources.
The Systems and plans section of the AIGI Indigenous Governance Toolkit includes Financial management, including financial lingo and terms, components of financial management and financial responsibilities.
First Nations Foundation has developed financial education and information, including My Money Dream, On Country and Indigenous Women’s Financial Wellness. Tomorrow Money is an additional resource focused on financial wellness and education for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
Non Profit Training offers a variety of courses, online training and webinars on topics including Finance Training.[12]
Our Community includes the Institute of Community Directors Australia which has established the Community Finance Centre in partnership with the Commonwealth Bank. The Centre includes help sheets, checklists, policies and guides related to financial management.
Moneysmart.gov.au provides free tools, tips and guidance about taking control of money matters.[13]
ANZ Bank has developed MoneyMinded, a free online financial education program that aims to help people make informed decisions about their money.[14]
