Learning Resources

This tool provides learning resources to learn more about gender equity and intersectionality. These resources provide a deeper understanding of the

constructs of gender and intersectionality and the important role gender justice and equality plays in mitigating harmful impacts. The learning resources can be used to support individual or workplace professional learning or classroom based activities.

Australian Gender Equality Council – a national not-for-profit organisation aimed at achieving gender equality in Australia.1

International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) – is an Australian-based organisation primarily focused on diverse women’s rights across Asia and the Pacific, but also contributing to global feminist movements to advance gender equality.2

Kimberlé Crenshaw – is credited for coining the term “intersectionality” and is  considered to be one of the biggest feminist thinkers of our time, particularly in terms of American civil rights and critical race theory.3

Gender Equity Victoria – is an independent peak body supporting gender equity organisations, practitioners and individuals in Victoria.4

Our Watch – is a national organisation focused on gender equality and the prevention of violence against women and their children in Australia.5

Safe and Equal – is a peak Victorian body specialising in family violence services to support victim survivors with the aim to create a world where all women, children and peoples from marginalised communities can safely thrive.6

UN Women – a United Nations organisation that sets global standards to uphold women’s and girls human rights and advance gender equality.7

Violence Against Women. Let’s Stop it at the Start – a joint government campaign aimed at parents, family members, teachers, coaches and employers of young people aged 10-17 to break the cycle of violence against women.8

Women’s Health Victoria – is a not-for-profit organisation focused on improving the health and wellbeing of Victorian women, however also offers training to individuals and workplaces on gender equity and prevention of violence against women.9

Womankind Worldwide – is a United Kingdom registered charity focused on working with partners to support women’s movements globally.10

YWCA Australia – a feminist organisation focused on making gender equality a reality.11

  • Australian Gender Equality Council has a collection of information and resources, including current gender statistics, gender pay and industry gaps, and ways to drive gender equality.
  • UN Women’s Training Centre offers free gender equality training courses, programmes and resources via UN Women eLearning Campus. The courses can be accessed by first registering and then enrolling into the relevant training. Suggested self-paced courses include:
    • I Know Gender 1-2-3 (2-3 hours) is focused on developing / strengthening awareness and understanding of gender equality and women’s empowerment into everyday work.
    • I Know Gender 6: Violence Against Women and Girls (1 hour) defines gender-based violence and provides strategies to address violence against women and girls.
    • I Know Gender 8: Gender Equality and Education (1 hour) discusses the main concepts and issues related to gender equality and education.
  • Gender Equity Victoria offers a variety of practice and further resources related to gender equity and preventing violence against women.
  • Our Watch, under Prevention in Action, has a suite of tools and information, including events, resources and peer-to-peer learning aimed at gender equality and preventing violence against women.
  • The Violence Against Women. Let’s Stop it at the Start campaign has a suite of resources for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including booklets, videos and guides focused on helping young people speak up and treat women and girls with respect.
  • Introduction to Gender Equity is a free, online short course offered by Women’s Health Victoria that includes knowledge about gender equity, intersectionality and common terminology. To access you need to add the course to the cart and then sign into your online training account.
  • Produced by Safe and Equal, Talking About Change: How to navigate resistance to gender equality is a booklet that draws on research and practice strategies to help respond to promote gender equality.
